Assessment and Dates

The assessment comprises of three separate sections.

  • A written Multiple Choice paper: This will be of 1 hour duration and will be based on sections of the course manual.
  • Viva: As part of the course you will be required to write a case study on a patient undergoing treatment in Phase III. The viva section of the assessment will give you the opportunity to talk through your case study with two tutors, one with clinical experience and one with exercise experience. It will give you the chance to expand if necessary on your written submission.
  • Compulsory Questions: These are a set of standardised questions relating to cardiovascular disease, risk stratification and emergency procedures and they will be asked at the beginning of the viva.

In order to gain the BACR Phase IV Exercise Instructor qualification you will need to gain a pass in all 3 sections of the assessment.

When we send your results you will also receive a report form, giving feedback from the tutors who assessed you during your viva. Should you fail to pass one or more of the three sections (we call this a ‘refer’) you will be given the opportunity to discuss your report with a tutor and get some guidance before re taking any part of the assessment. It will only be necessary to re take the section/sections on which you referred, the cost of this will depend on which sections you need to re take.

All revalidation/MCQ assessments start at 12.30pm unless specified.
